It is not a bad trip for everyone, and the three recent reviews below are all five stars, but more guests than usual come away disappointed.

The day on the water is short. The boat leaves Tuan Chau at about 12:00 and is back at the pier by 16:00 to 16:30: about 4.5 hours, against about 6 on our day pick for $3 more. In that time you visit one cave and spend 45 minutes in a kayak or on a bamboo boat. There is no beach and no swimming stop.

The highlights also say more than the timetable. They name a floating village and 'the famous James Bond cave', but the hour-by-hour plan lists only lunch on board, Thien Cung cave and the kayak area. If those extra stops are why you would book, ask the operator before you pay.

When the Early Finish Makes This Tour Worth It

The one thing the most booked day cruises do not match is the 19:00 return. If you leave Hanoi the same night, by sleeper bus to Ha Giang or Sapa or by night train to Hue or Da Nang, a cruise that drops you at 21:00 or later is too tight, and this one is not.

Travellers going on from Ha Long can also leave their luggage in the bus's luggage compartment during the tour. And the route is different: Thien Cung cave is on Route 1, away from the Sung Sot and Ti Top loop that most day boats share in the afternoon.

Pack a hat, a raincoat, insect repellent, a torch, water and some cash for drinks, which are paid on board.
