The road is half of a day trip. Here is how to live with it

How the pickup works. Most cruises collect you from your hotel or a meeting point in the Old Quarter in the morning, usually between 7:30 and 8:30. The exact time and place are on the booking confirmation, and the Old Quarter is the easiest place to be picked up from; hotels further out sometimes pay a surcharge or walk to a meeting point. The ride goes by expressway with one rest stop about halfway, which is usually a large souvenir shop with toilets and coffee.
Shuttle or limousine van. Cheaper cruises use a shared shuttle bus. More expensive ones use what Vietnam calls a limousine: a nine- or eleven-seat van with reclining leather seats. Both take roughly the same time; the difference is comfort and how many hotels the driver stops at. A private car is the only way to leave when you choose, and private cruises usually include one.
Which pier. Most Ha Long Bay cruises and day boats board at Tuan Chau or at Ha Long International Cruise Port. Some Lan Ha Bay cruises board at a different pier closer to Cat Ba Island, which can add time on the road. The product page names the pier; it is worth checking before you compare two cruises only by price.
What the road costs you. On a day cruise the road is half the day: a 13-hour trip gives you about 6 hours on the water. On a one-night cruise the same five hours of driving are spread over two days, and you spend roughly 23 hours on the water. That is the main reason we suggest one night to anyone who can spare it.
Getting there on your own. You can take a public bus from Hanoi to Ha Long and find a boat at the harbour. It is the cheapest way, but you organise the bus, the pier, the boat and the ride back yourself, and the time you save is small. It makes sense for travellers who are staying in Ha Long for several days anyway.
Coming back. Day cruises are back in Hanoi in the evening, between 19:00 and 21:30 on the itineraries we checked; one-night cruises around the middle of the second afternoon. If you have a flight or a night train the same day, leave a margin of at least three hours — expressway traffic on Sunday afternoons is slow.
The pickup is the easy part
Most day cruises include the transfer, so the decision is not how to get there but whether a day is enough. Expect a pickup between 7:30 and 8:30, about 6 hours on the water and a return to Hanoi between 19:00 and 21:30. What fits between the two drives
A day trip fits the three classic stops of Ha Long Bay: Sung Sot Cave on foot, Luon Cave by kayak or bamboo boat for 35 minutes to an hour, and Ti Top Island for a swim or the climb to the viewpoint. With a night on board you get both days' stops, and in Lan Ha the kayaking is quieter.
Book before you arrive, not at a counter
Travel desks in the Old Quarter sell the same ships, often with less clarity on the cabin and the pier. Booking online lets you compare nights on board, cabin and pickup side by side and see reviews before you pay.
Pickup has changed this year
From 1 July 2026, buses with more than 16 seats may not pick up passengers in the Hanoi Old Quarter from 6:00 to 9:00, or drop them off there from 16:00 to 19:30. Those are the hours cruise buses leave and come back, so a large bus may no longer reach your hotel door.
What the operators do instead is on the listings. On the most booked day cruise, the exact pickup point and time are confirmed within 24 hours of booking and again 24 hours before departure, by email or WhatsApp. The luxury day cruise with buffet lunch sets a meeting point a short walk away when your hotel is in a restricted street; guests staying outside the Old Quarter meet its bus at 160 Tran Quang Khai Street, the last pickup, at 8:00 to 8:10.
Answer the operator's message the day before: it names the meeting point and the time, and both can differ from the time printed on your ticket.
Read the option before you pay
Day cruises from Hanoi usually build the bus into the price, as long as you choose the Hanoi option. Many one-night cruises do not. Our overnight pick costs $187 for the cruise alone, for a departure on 7 October; the shared transfer from Hanoi or Ninh Binh is $25 per person more. The 5-star cruise with a junior-suite balcony, from $146, and the 2D1N balcony cruise from $159 charge the same $25.
The extra buys some flexibility. On all three you can be collected in Hanoi and dropped in Ninh Binh, or the other way round, if you arrange it in advance, and the 2D1N balcony cruise also offers a transfer to Hanoi airport on request, for a fee. You can also skip the bus and board at Tuan Chau Marina on your own.

Same road, different seat
Both take the expressway and about 2.5 hours to the pier. The shuttle is a full-size bus that collects several hotels; the limousine is a 9- or 11-seat van with reclining seats. The new Old Quarter rule covers buses over 16 seats, so it is the shuttle that now meets you at a street corner, while a limousine is under the limit as the rule is written.
Which one you get is on the listing. Its luxury option adds a buffet and a jacuzzi on the same route as the standard boat. It is a Hanoi Halong Bay cruise to Amazing Cave, Titop Island and Luon Cave: Sung Sot, the Amazing Cave, takes 40 to 60 minutes on foot with stairs, and the kayaks at Luon Cave take two people.
Children may kayak only if they are over 10 and taller than 130 cm, with a parent, and adults must weigh under 100 kg; everyone else takes the bamboo boat, 10 to 12 people with a rower. Drinks are sold on board, and there is no water refill, so bring a full reusable bottle.

The ride back takes as long as the ride out, and the listings give the arrival in Hanoi as an estimate that depends on traffic. These are the partners' own times for the end of the day.
Across the day itineraries we checked, the drop-off falls between 19:00 and 21:30. With the three-hour margin we suggest, that rules out any train or flight the same evening after a day cruise. After one night on board, back around 15:00, a train or flight from about 18:00 fits; book the day after for anything earlier.
