One night is the length most people should book. Of the 170 cruises we compare on GetYourGuide, 88 are day trips, 52 spend one night on board and 28 are sold as three-day trips — and the one-night cruise is the first length at which the time on the water dwarfs the time on the road.
A day cruise from Hanoi is a long day with a short Halong Bay boat trip in the middle. The drive to the pier takes about 2.5 hours each way, boarding and transfers take another two, and what is left is about 6 hours on the water out of a 13-hour day — 4.5 to 7.5 in the itineraries we checked.
You see Sung Sot Cave and Ti Top Island, paddle through Luon Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, eat lunch on deck and turn back before the light gets interesting. Among day Halong Bay boat trips with 50 or more reviews, prices for a departure on 7 October run from $29 to $58 per person, and $42 is typical. It is the right choice when you have one free day in Hanoi and not a second one.

One night changes the ratio. You board around midday and stay on the ship until late morning: about 23 hours on the water against the same five hours of road. That buys the three things no Halong Bay boat tour by day can — sunset from the sundeck, a night at anchor between the islands, and the bay at six in the morning before most day boats arrive.
One-night cruises with 50 or more reviews cost $103 to $343 per person, and the middle of the market sits around $153. Most of them offer the drive too: 40 of the 52 pick up in Hanoi, though many charge about $25 per person for it.
Three days is where the listings stop meaning the same thing. Some three-day cruises spend both nights on the ship; many spend the first day in Ninh Binh, the first night in a hotel, and only then board for one night on the water. One guest put it plainly:
“So when I booked this I thought it was 2 nights cruise and 3 days however… Day 1 - was the Ninh Binh tour.”
Read the itinerary before you pay for a second night on the water you may not get. The cruises that do stay aboard both nights usually sail further, into Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long, where fewer ships anchor; among those with 50 or more reviews, three-day trips cost $231 to $427 per person.
